Comparatives and Superlatives Grammar
- Lesson 1/1
Lesson 1
Comparative
To use the comparative, all you need to do is state what you're talking about (maybe a table, or other noun), add 'plus' (more) or 'moins' (less), then the adjective, and finally add 'que' and what you are comparing it to.
Examples:
'Il est plus cool que moi'='He is cooler than me'
'Ce film est moins intéressant que l'autre film'='This film is less interesting than the other film'
'La femme est plus fatiguée que son fils'='The woman is more tired than her son'
Superlative
To use the superlative, it's super easy. As the superlative is the extreme of something (like 'the most amazing'), all you have to do is say 'le/la plus/moins', and then the adjective. Hey presto, you're done!
Examples:
'Il est le plus stupide'='He's the most stupid'
'Elle a la plus belle voix'='She has the most beautiful voice'
'C'est le moins cher'='It's the least expensive'
But there's more!
As ever, there are a few exceptions. Learn them.
1) Bien
'Bien' becomes 'mieux' in the comparative, and 'le/la mieux' in the superlative.
2) Bon
'Bon' becomes 'meilleur' in the comparative, and 'le/la meilleur' in the superlative.
3) Mauvais
Mauvais is an odd one, that's for sure! You choose which one you prefer here - either 'pire' or 'plus mauvais(e) in the comparative, and either 'le/la pire' or 'le/la plus mauvais(e)' in the superlative.
