Questions Formation - Lesson 1/1

Lesson 1

In French, there are three main ways to ask questions. Here they are:

1) Using 'est-ce que'

This is the most commonly used, as it can be used with most questions.

It literally means 'is it that' or 'is this that', but its best translation is 'do...'.

Examples:

  • Est-ce que tu aimes le sport ?=Do you like sport?

  • Est-ce que tu joues ?=Do you play?

  • Est-ce qu'il fait ses devoirs ?=Is he doing is homework?

2) The blunt question

This one's a lot easier.

All you have to do is say a statement (like 'il y a du soleil'), and add a question mark! Easier to do than explain.

Examples:

  • Tu aimes le sport ?=Do you like sport?

  • Tu joues ?=Do you play?

  • Il fait ses devoirs ?=Is he doing is homework?

3) The fliperoonie

This one's a bit more complex, but nothing too difficult.

All you have to do is take a statement (like 'tu fais tu sport'), and flip the verb and the pronoun (so this would be 'fais-tu du sport ?'.)

Examples:

  • Aimes-tu le sport ?=Do you like sport?

  • Joues-tu ?=Do you play?

  • Fait-il ses devoirs ?=Is he doing is homework?
